EXPERIENCE

Kaikoura Wilderness Experience offers you a range of activites and accommodation on the stunning Puhi Peaks Station, the highest privately owned property in New Zealand, rising from 400m to 2600m. Enjoy guided walks, hunts, meetings and educational tours within an extraordinary range of topography and geology, stunning views and our extensive range of rare and endangered biodiversity, all protected in perpetuity under a QE2 Covenant.

WALKS

Our Kaikoura Wilderness Experience walks on Puhi Peaks are designed to offer a unique and private experience that will leave a lasting impression on you. On arrival, you will be welcomed to the Woolshed building by our Station Managers and walk guide, and given a presentation about the history and purpose of Puhi Peaks over a small morning tea before departing for your walk.

Your walk will immerse you in our majestic environment and introduce you to the unique and stunning attributes that make Puhi Peaks Nature Reserve an internationally sought-after experience. As New Zealand's highest freehold land, Puhi Peaks rises from 350m to 2,414m, and your walk will afford you magnificent views, as well as the opportunity to spot rare and endangered native species of birds, fauna, flora, and trees. You will also witness the native regeneration taking place within our QE2 Covenant-protected areas and take in the stunning vistas of our wider property, mountains, and coastline.

We believe you will leave Puhi Peaks always wanting to return.

We’re proudly part of the Great Hikes App (greathikesapp.com) ! Enhance your walking experience with the app  - featuring GPS tracking, route elevations and a fly-through video of our tracks, helping you prepare, navigate and enjoy your walks.Download the app and start exploring now.

FITNESS REQUIREMENT

Our walks require a medium to high level of fitness and are not designed for users that are not familiar with high country environments or undulating walks of over 2 hours. Customers should ensure their personal level of fitness is suited to each walk that is outlined and available to be enjoyed easily.

EQUIPMENT TO BRING

Be sure to bring what you need for the duration of your walk. The basics include; comfortable and warm walking clothing, sturdy walking boots, warm socks, waterproof jacket and over trousers, sun hat, sunglasses, warm hat and gloves. Please bring any required personal medication and first aid supplies, food and drink and a small pack to carry your gear. Items such as cameras and binoculars are strongly recommended as are dry clothes to change into after walking, given the unpredictable nature of the high country environment. If staying overnight, please bring a sleeping bag / bedding with you and comfortable shoes for getting between your hut accommodation and the Woolshed amenity building.

TRANSPORT

You are welcome to bring your own vehicle, however we suggest this should be 4WD capable as you will cross four small fords on the journey up the Puhi Puhi Valley Road and road conditions that requires good cushioning and reasonable chassis clearance.

You can also arrange road transport from and back to Kaikoura via our road transport partner Kaikoura Shuttles (www.kaikourashuttles.co.nz)

Helicopter transfer is quick 14 minute stunning experience and can be organised via our air travel partner Kaikpoura Helicopters (www.gchaviation.co.nz)

Future Development Plans

Exciting new projects in the works

Trail Network

We are currently working with a leading NZ creator and developer of walking and cycling tracks, who has identified a number of new trails that we will be developing and launching progressively from early 2025. These trails will offer a mix of sole and dual purpose activity and provide for both guided and unguided experiences across our unique and world class terrain, with simply stunning views and native bush settings. A mixture of easy, medium and challenging walks and rides are on their way, catering for the broad range of visitors we wish to invite into the stunning Puhi Peaks environment. A ride on Puhi Peaks Station then on Puhi Puhi Valley Road to join the Whale Trail back into Kaikoura will be an attractive and suitably challenging offer for many.

Accommodation

We have recently submitted our wider development plan Resource Consent application for increased visitor accommodation at Puhi Peaks. This will see us create three new self-contained accommodation units across our property, each catering for between 5 and 12 people, designed to offer a range of amenity that will appeal to walkers, hunters, those simply seeking a relaxed off the grid stay, a Dark Sky overnight  experience or for scientific research and learning purposes.

Facilities

In support of our existing cabin accommodation, we are currently upgrading our iconic Woolshed building, that offers shower, toilet and kitchen facilities, as well as a mezzanine level meeting room, log fire and later in 2025, the Puhi Peaks Museum.

We have recently added an extensive covered deck to the Woolshed that offers stunning views and we will be installing a new large ranch slider window / doors to this deck, as well aslarger windows on the mezzanine level, to enhance the external viewing experience of the kitchen and meeting room.

A new two unit ablution block has also been installed in front of the Woolshed, supporting the extensive adjacent lawn area where picnics, post walk recovery and relaxation can take place.
